W Stretch Down Hood 3.0

How warm is it, really?
Warm enough for everyday winter and cold-weather activity down to around −10°C, depending on what you wear under it and how much you're moving. Standing still in real cold, you'll want a mid layer underneath. Working hard, you'll open the front. Warmth always depends more on the person than the jacket.

What's new in the 3.0?
Three things. The woven baffles now close vertically, so the fill is locked in, and survives the washing machine without clumping. The stretch shell is a new square-woven 3D fabric, tougher and with a clean mountain DNA. And the fit is redesigned: straighter, more contemporary. Same 750 FP fill, same concept — refined, not reinvented.

Will it tear easily, like most down jackets?
No — it won't. Most down jackets (including some of ours) are wrapped in paper-thin ripstop to save weight. This one is a double-wall woven fabric, the same weave that holds the down chambers. Pack straps, dog paws, firewood, daily wear — it takes it. Sharp edges and open flames are still sharp edges and open flames.

What if it gets wet?
Snow, sleet, and drizzle are no problem — the fabric is tightly woven and DWR-treated, there are no stitch holes for moisture to find, and the down is water-resistant. Steady rain is shell weather: put one over it and the down keeps doing its job underneath.

Do I wear it under a shell or on its own?
Both. On its own, it's the outer layer for dry cold days. You can go skiing in it, we do. When wind or rain arrives, it layers cleanly under a shell.

Do I size up?
No — regular fit, true to size, with room for a base layer and a fleece underneath. The stretch handles the rest.

Does the loft flatten over time?
Not if you treat it right — down is the most durable insulation there is when it's kept clean and dry. We still hear from customers wearing their 2018 first-generation jackets. Give it a day or two to fully loft when it arrives compressed, and store it hanging, not stuffed. Wash it occasionally and the down comes back to life. The closed baffles mean it comes out of the machine the way it went in.

Vest, Jacket, or Hood?
The Hood is the most versatile: full warmth plus head and neck protection for stops and exposure. The Jacket does the same job without the hood. The Vest is core warmth with your arms free. Most people start with the Hood or Jacket and add the Vest later.
